NETWORK MAPS   -  MAPAS DE REDES

Q: How can we draw network maps using software?

A: We use two programs to draw the network maps. First we put the information from the workshop-drawn network maps into a text file which are then imported into UCINET. UCINET puts the text file into matrix format which we then plot in NetDraw.

Q: What if we want to map other relationships than funding, research, scaling out and scaling up?

A: Network mapping can be used for whatever relationships that are important for the project. However, plotting too many relationships can lead to complicated maps which are difficult to interpret.

Q: The network maps show relationships between organizations but in reality relationships are between people. How do we capture that?

A: If it is important to capture relationships between people, then the positions they occupy can appear as the nodes in the map.

Q: What direction should the arrows face in problem trees?

A: It should go in the direction of causality, that is, if there are other problems causing one problem the arrows should face the previous problem.

Q: Where should the problem tree begin and where should it end?

A: It should begin with a problem statement related to the project's goal. If the project is part of a program, you might just want to go a step further to show how achieving the project's goal can help further the program's goal. The problem tree finishes on a problem that the project is going to directly act on (the determinant).

PROGRESS ON OUTPUTS/OUTCOMES   -  DESARROLLO DE PRODUCTOS Y RESULTADOS

Q: What is the difference between progress on outputs and progress on outcomes? Where do we report activities or progress, achievements that have to do with both?

A: The difference is found in the "how". How did that activity help your progress towards the output? What milestone does it complete/achieve? And then - in the section for progress towards outcomes - what knowledge, attitude and skills (KAS) or practice change did this activity contribute to? What did your project learn or establish about how your target groups are learning/changing? What are the implications for your future activities, and does this affect your theory of change?
It is good news to find activities, progress and achievements that address both.

Q: How far into the future should a vision go?

A: Option 1: two years, if you want to stretch people into thinking who would be using project outputs after the end of the project. The disadvantage with this is that it might be too far into the future for people to be realistic about.

Option 2: ask the people how far into the future can they plan? if they say 6 months you multiply it by three. You do a vision a year and a half into the future.

Q: What is scaling up and scaling out?

A: Scaling out refers to the increasing adoption of project outputs from farmer to farmer, or community to community, within the same stakeholder groups. Scaling-up refers to a vertical institutional expansion based largely on first-hand experience, word-of-mouth, and positive feedback from adopters to policy makers and the other stakeholders. Scaling-up is key to building a more enabling environment for the scaling-out process
